The stem length matters because it determines how far the roller sits into the hinge tube. Too short and the roller walks; too long and the stem can bind against the hinge as the door travels the radius.

If you can’t find the model number on the sticker near the hinge, count the hinges. Doors with 7-inch stem rollers typically have hinges stamped with the number 1 through 5 on the bottom section and a taller top fixture. The wheel diameter is the second tell: measure across the wheel face. Nearly every Clopay residential door in McDonough takes a 2-inch wheel, but a handful of insulated doors on custom orders used a 1-13/16-inch roller we match by measuring on site before anything gets quoted.

Signs Your Clopay Roller Is Failing

• The door sounds like it’s dragging gravel on one side. A roller with a seized bearing doesn’t spin; it slides. The metal-on-metal scrape you’re hearing is the flat-spotted wheel grinding across the track, and it’s usually worse in the middle of the travel where the door is heaviest.
• The door visibly jerks or shudders once per revolution. When the flat spot on the wheel rolls to the bottom, the door drops a fraction of an inch and catches itself. That stutter is the roller telling you it’s done.
• Metal shavings or a fine gray dust collect under the track. This is the smoking gun. Nylon wheels shed gray dust; steel-on-steel contact leaves metal shavings. Either way, the bearing has failed and the wheel is being worn down every cycle.
• The door hangs slightly crooked when viewed from the street. A wallowed-out roller stem or a bearing that has collapsed will let one corner drop, and the section will sit off-level even with the springs balanced.
• The door gets louder over time, then suddenly quieter. This one tricks people. When the roller finally wears through enough material to slip instead of bind, the grinding stops because there’s nothing left to grind. The roller is still failed, just quieter about it.

You can safely inspect the rollers from inside the garage with the door closed: look for flat spots on the wheels, check for shavings, and watch how the door tracks when it moves. What you shouldn’t do is unbolt a roller from the bottom bracket or attempt any removal on a door with the spring system under tension. The bottom roller is attached to a bracket that carries spring load on most Clopay doors, and releasing that bracket without the proper sequence can let the cable whip and the section drop. That’s a hospital trip, not a Saturday project.

Even the hinges that hold the mid-door rollers can be knocked loose from their press-fit track bolts if you force them, which turns a $150 roller job into a section-alignment problem.
